USA barreling toward an awful November. It doesn't have to be.
If Biden steps aside, history will call his presidency a success. If he stays on the ballot…
Joe Biden and Donald Trump are the only two people in America happy about a Trump-Biden rematch for president.
What’s happening at this stage is the political parties – private organizations that do not have any Constitutional status – are forcing on the public a terrible choice, so party insiders can cling to money and power.
The matchup is depressing in too many ways to count. More than half of Democrats don’t want Biden running again, more than a third of Republicans don’t want Trump running again.
Come Election Day, voters choose. But when the issue is selecting candidates, the parties choose: and can compel the public to pick between doddering, self-absorbed senior citizens each with more baggage than a Pullman car.
Boss Tweed, who ran the 19th century Tammany Hall political machine of New York City, said, “I don’t care who does the electing so long as I get to do the nominating.”
While primaries play a role in selecting candidates, each party’s internal rules regarding delegates is the first factor – and unelected party insiders are more concerned with clinging to power than the good of the country.
That insiders, not voters, are choosing the 2024 candidates is why the depressing Biden-Trump rematch looms. The GOP and the Democrats keep rewriting their rulebooks to shift power inward, and by this election cycle, primaries have become mostly for-show.
