Elections long have involved creation of bogeymen. Candidates exaggerate, seeking fear-based votes. Social media has made fearmongering worse – but it’s been a norm of American campaigning for a long time.

Something else has happened, though. Fearmongering has spread broadly across politics (state and federal), the media, academia, publishing, the foundation world.

This wouldn’t be happening unless some were benefitting.
