"Substack has invented a successful new model both for writers and for readers."

In Legacy Media, particularly Print, if I wanted to read the latest from Gregg Easterbrook, I had to subscribe or buy a whole newspaper or magazine. Substack lets me curate my feed to my liking.

"All Predictions Wrong will stay written-word-only.)"

But if all your predictions are wrong, then you will not stay written-word-only. I'm calling this the Easterbrook Paradox and now excuse me while I file a trademark.

Congratulations!! I wanted to also say thanks for giving me many hours of pleasure over the past number of years (I've been a reader since the early days of TMQ). More than ever we need voices like yours to put things in perspective, confound, tease and make us laugh. As a Canadian, I like to have a rational window open into your world. As the old adage goes: An elephant and a mouse are in the same room. The elephant doesn't care where the mouse is or what the mouse does, but the mouse ALWAYS has to know where the elephant is and what it does. Keep on moving' on.

So happy you have reached the "clipshow" phase of your publication. When watching a television series I always knew a show as "made it" when I see a clipshow episode. About 20 years ago the Simpsons (who due to their longevity have had numerous clipshow episodes) ended an episode with a song parody of "we didn't start the fire" that contained a lyric "we have stories for years" that mentioned absurd episode ideas. Would love to hear some absurd article ideas that undoubtedly will come true in the next 20 years because all predictions are wrong! Happy Birthday and here's to Gregg having stories for years!

I’d argue both serious and unserious writing are thriving on Substack. I would certainly not argue against All Predictions Wrong (and TMQ) being the best!

Congratulations on your success!

Question about the discounted subscription offer: Is the offer only for new subscribers? Can current subscribers get the discount?

Tech support says you can’t extend a new-subscriber discount to someone who already subscribes. That feels wrong so I’ve asked them to write code to allow this. Substack is still in the demonstration phase in areas where tech is evolving, if and when this changes I will let you know – Gregg

Fair enough. Thank you very much for investigating that.

I actually don’t know. I just asked tech support about it. Many Substacks offer a discount for new subscribers, so this must have come up before.

The problem with substack is the same with ala carte streaming. When you don’t get an aggregation of different providers, you miss out on potentially being introduced to new thoughts or products through serendipity and proximity.
